Nature-based tourism is travel for the purpose of enjoying undeveloped natural areas or wildlife" (Tools and resources for Nature-based Tourism, World Bank). While the best managed nature-based tourism is sustainable tourism, some nature-based tourism operations do not meet the standards of sustainable tourism. </span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">While sustainable tourism practices can be applied to all types of tourism, <strong>ecotourism</strong> is a <strong>special</strong> type of small-scale tourism that embodies principles. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The most recent definition by The Global Ecotourism Network (GEN, 2016), is </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and creates knowledge and understanding through interpretation and education of all involved: visitors, staff and the visited”.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ecotourism is</span> often nature-based tourism, but not all nature-based tourism is ecotourism.
