His analysis shows ecotourism incorporates the key elements of sustainable development through tourism. He notes that the core criteria of ecotourism include:

The question "what is the difference between sustainable tourism and ecotourism?" has been an important topic for over 30 years. Fortunately, in 2000, a broad agreement on the nature of the two approaches was agreed upon by a group of researchers and academics. Their work was called the Mohonk Agreement. Sustainable tourism principles can be applied to all types of tourism. Countries, large urban centers, and small nature-based can adopt sustainable tourism practices. All tourism businesses, from cruise lines to hotels, attractions to tour operators, can adopt sustainable practices. As the definition from the Global Ecotourism Network (GEN), shows, ecotourism is a special type of sustainable tourism. Ecotourism tends to be small-scale, focused on environmental and cultural issues, and designed to educate visitors they engage with the ecotourism experience. The Mohonk Agreement notes that ecotourism incorporates the principles and practices of sustainable tourism and adds the following criteria:

Focus on personal experiences of nature leading to greater appreciation and understanding.

Interpretation and environmental awareness of nature, local society, and culture.

Positive and active contributions to the conservation of natural areas and biodiversity

Economic, social, and cultural benefits of local communities.

Fostering community involvement, where appropriate.

(Source: Global Ecotourism Network)

Sustainable development is a critical part of ecotourism because it makes any enterprise consider not only the needs of local people but also, the needs of future generations. Conserving the natural world for now and for future generations. These values transcend the interests of the corporation and the local population which otherwise might take a more self-interested approach. Ethically, sustainability is not just applicable to ecotourism. Sustainability can, and should, apply to any other type of tourism.
